Varus Legacy

Session 7
Coming Home

Returning to Coruscant and realizing that Jessa is a criminal to the Imperial Navy, and that Jolun and Mara are accomplices, they set course for a remote office of the Varus Shipping on Corellia. They take a rest at this time and restock. Jolun catches up on the tasks of running a business.

During this time, Jessa takes to meditation and comes back to reflect on the name Danr Ksing, the mysterious person who tried to warn Jolun of the impending attack by Imperial soldiers. She does some research and is able to track the name to a professor of music at the Cloud City Academy of Music. Looking at his picture, she feels this is a person from her past but cannot remember any other details.

Within a couple of weeks, Jolun is contacted by Bregun with a contract: To deliver medical supplies to an Alderaan refugee ship orbiting the planet of Taanab, the Prayer of Hope. As a secondary objective, Jolun is given intelligence data to their captain, to aid the rebellion.

Reaching the Prayer of Hope orbiting Taanab, they find the corvette boarded by an Imperial Customs Corvette, the Pillar of Fire. Jolun notices that one of the larger escape shuttles has undocked from the captured vessel. Avoiding a conflict with Imperial forces, they land at the capital city of Pandath, owned by the Agricultural Corps, the primary authority on the planet.

Wanting to find out where the escape shuttle landed, they begin a pattern search, going outward from the city and find within the vessel within an hour. Finding it captured as well, they land close by and front as reporters to get some information from the guards nearby. Not wanting to cause a stir and alert other Imperial Customs soldiers to their presence they leave, but circle around to find the missing shuttle inhabitants and pursuing Imperial soldiers.

In their search to find the missing refugees, they do see the Imperial soldiers scouting the forest, about fifteen minutes of foot travel from an abandoned settlement. Jolun lands his ship and greets the refugees, who are thankful for the advance warning and the offer to use his ship to escape. In the ensuing evacuation, Jessa finds that this place was at one time used as a retreat and school for the Jedi Agricultural Corps. She quickly gathers the central computer core and terminal, as well as some other artifacts.

As the ship is about to depart, a man approaches Mara, her father Ranger. After a quick reunion, they board together, with much information to discuss.

Session 6
All the Space Cows

The group continues their pursuit of the Jedi twins Rynn & Wynn, but as they near the outside of the city of Kala’uun they realize that the aberrant sandstorm will overpower them without the protection of the solid rock walls of the city.

Turning back, they stop in the offices of the Armstrong Corporation and access two computers. On their first attempt, they find that the Imperial Intelligence has locked out Armstrong since yesterday afternoon, and had been using this office as a base of operations. They also find the direct report for Culreni is a woman named Rika Koroban, who works for the Lucar Corporation out of their Coruscant office. On their second attempt, Jolun is able to lift the security lock and find that Culreni was trying to wholesale purchase all of the rycrit from Kala’uun.

At this point, Jolun puts the pieces together: The Jedi lurking around the rycrit pens, the girl’s drawing of something in the rycrit’s stomach and why Culreni was purchasing all of the rycrit. They head to the base floor and using a floor plan of the city, make their way to the livestock pens. There, after searching, they find a veterinarian’s tent. Jessa senses two people within the tent, and the group enters to find a veterinarian and a farmer, retrieving something from a rycrit’s stomach. They soon find the diamonds, and they barter with the farmer to arrange for them to be handed over to the local police. Jolun is then pronounced as free to leave.

Jessa reaches out with the Force, and can sense the twin Jedi going off-planet. She can also no longer sense the girl that she met in the upper levels of Kala’uun. Jolun also questions why his rivalry with Lucar has become personal and what his future may be. Many mysteries remain to be answered.

Back at Jolun’s ship, he is able to hack into the Kala’uun local network and find out that the problems he had at the spaceport came from the computer of a man named Culreni, who currently works for the Armstrong Corporation, a subsidiary of the Lucar Corporation. He is able to reverse the hack, clearing his name of one offense.

Jolun goes to The Istria hotel to speak with Gurj, a Gammorean working for Schaumm & Associates. Gurj shows them the vault, which has been melted by some kind of powerful torch. Inside the vault, only one safe has been hacked open, the one that contained the diamond Jolun is accused of stealing. Gurj is quick to say that although it is valuable, it had been used to focus a laser in the past. Looking at the surveillance videos, they see a Jedi using their lightsaber. Not sure of how to proceed, Jolun makes his way to the second lead, the offices of the Armstrong Corporation.

Jessa reaches out with the Force to find the two Jedi on the ground level, in the agriculture area. She quietly stalks them, hoping to catch them, but they are able to evade her in the darkness and start climbing through the city. Jessa keeps her distance, but is able to keep up with them.

At Armstrong Corporation, Jolun and Mara see two figures approaching and hide in a nearby alley. When the door is open, Mara rushes the door and is able to keep it open while she engages the two figures, who reveal themselves to be twin Jedi teenagers. A fight breaks out, with Culreni joining the fight, allowing the two Jedi to escape through the back. Jessa is distracted when she sees a young girl in a white dress drop a sheet of paper before slipping off. Jolun questions Culreni, who informs him that Inreth Lucar is responsible for setting him up and that the Jedi are involved somehow. Jessa finds the paper the girl dropped has a picture of a Rycrit with a blue scribble on its stomach.

As the group pursues the Jedi through a secret passage, they begin to hear the wind pick up and sand is being blown about.

  • Jessa follows the Jedi, using a Force ability.
  • She sees the two Jedi leaving Jolun’s ship.
  • Jolun and Mara check the ship and find that the computer has been downloaded.
  • Jolun and Mara are discovered by police while searching the ship.
  • Jolun is able to activate his commlink and they find out that they are going to the central administrative police office to speak to Captain Vress about something that has gone missing.
  • In the police office, they find out that Jolun is being accused for a theft of diamonds from the Istiria. The owners, Schaum & Associates, have made someone available to speak to, named Gurj. The police captain tells them that they have until tomorrow morning to find out who is responsible, otherwise they might be brought to trial or worse.
  • Jessa tracks the Jedi to an Armstrong Corporation office but cannot detect them. She sees some surveillance inside and the office itself is constructed of metal and fortified.

Session 3

Vod’Ri sets to work, creating special items for Jessa, Jolun and Mara. Over the course of a day, the weaponsmiths under his employ create the following items:

  • For Jessa, a parrying gauntlet (+2 equipment bonus to reflex defnse, 1 square burst of fog with a swift action 1/day)
  • For Jolun, a darter gun with a box containing 25 tracking darts and a tracking computer effective to a range of 5 kilometers
  • For Mara, a tracking eye implant (+2 to perception and low-light vision)

After saying their goodbyes, the group travels to the subterranean city of Kala’uun to deliver the construction cores. It takes some time to set their flight path, but once they do the trip is a short and uneventful one. Docking in the only port, located at ground level, Jolun sees a Lucar Corporation ship and he gets tense. The company has a reputation for unethical practices, both in their actions and in the contracts they pursue. It is likely for this reason that the Empire favours them and they have continued to grow in their presence and influence.

As a result, Jessa stays to guard the cargo while Jolun and Mara walk to the office to initiate the offloading process. As they are walking up the steps to the office, they encounter the head of the Lucar Corporation, Inreth Lucar, who greets Jolun politely. Even with this unusually polite exchange, this only adds to Jolun’s sense of unease. Inside the office, the dock captain, a shorter Twi’lek man named Ba’ruuk, asks them to identify themselves. Doing so prompts an alert on his terminal, although his attitude doesn’t change much. Mara is able to position herself so that she can see that the security alert is indicating that Jolun is a terrorist. When the group indicates that they’ll be leaving, Ba’ruuk informs them that a sandstorm is imminent and that they should stay on behalf of the city at the nicest hotel in Kala’uun, the Istiria.

When the group boards their starship, Mara is able to update Jolun as to the situation. Although they have some difficulty finding the information, they eventually confirm that there is a sandstorm heading towards the city. With concerns of an ambush or even a possible assassination, the group forms a rough plan to check in to the Istiria and then sleep elsewhere. Mara ventures into the city, while Jolun attempts to determine more information about his incrimination. Although he is locked out of the federal network, he is able to access the local government infrastructure and determine that the report of his terrorism is recent, unfounded and filed by a Rath Culreni of a local company named Armstrong Corporation. With further research, he finds that this company is a subsidiary of Lucar Corporation.

Mara returns with a room being booked at the Hot Springs, a hotel in the middle of the city. According to her report, the poorer working class inhabits the more stagnant ground level, while the upper level is reserved for the more wealthy and luxurious residences. The individual layers of the city also get larger the closer towards ground level, so that more people can be housed in the poorer regions. Architecturally speaking this is a paradox, as the narrower top of the city has more open space with the wider ground level of the city having less open space due to larger platforms built into the natural earth formation.

The group heads into the city, purchasing a small remote surveillance camera at a small electronics vendor. They walk through the city to the Istiria and check in. Jessa enters behind them and books a room next to theirs. Inside, they install the surveillance camera and make further plans. Jessa distracts the front desk person using a Jedi ability to suggest something, making the hotel employee think it’s their break time and leave. With that, Jolun and Mara travel to the Hot Springs and check in. Jessa returns to her room in the Istiria.

With everyone waiting to see what happens, Jessa hears footsteps outside of her room at 8PM local time. After using the Force to determine if it would be a good idea to go into the hallway, she does so. In the hallway are six men in formal business attire, four guarding Jolun’s room and one at each stairwell. They appear to be guarding Jolun’s room and the wing in general. Jessa is surprised to realize that these men are human and not Twi’lek. Not sure how to proceed, she walks into the closet stairwell and reviews the surveillance camera footage feed.

Jessa waits in the stairwell for quite some time, but everything is quiet. Suddenly around 11PM the power in the hotel goes out. For a minute everything is silent, with the camera only detecting the sounds of the men talking outside of the door. And then Jessa sees the silhouette of a man entering the room from the balcony. He surveys the room, looking for something specific, and then he leaves. Moments later the government operatives break in the door and start searching with flashlights. Using the surveillance camera, Jessa hears shouts of, “They’re not here! Well find them!” Curious to know what is happening, she reaches out with the Force to find that the person in the room was a Jedi, and that there is another one in the city at the ground level. Surprisingly, the Jedi that was in the hotel room is now in a free-fall towards the second Jedi.

Session 2

Vod’Ri Sedai joins the group and asks them to rescue his daughter. “You might think me a bad father,” he starts, “but when ”/campaigns/varus-legacy/characters/nev-ra-sedai" class=“wiki-content-link”>Nev’Ra returned to me yesterday I had her implanted with a planetary tracking device." He hands a tracking mechanism to Jolun, indicating that she cannot be tracked off-planet without this mobile device.

Vod’Ri lays out his plan before Jessa, Jolun and Mara: A diversion will be created by about two dozen starfighters, allowing them to dock with the Corellian Corvette and rescue Nev’Ra. He asks them to hold back during the distraction and mysteriously states that they will know when to make their move. The group are led to a modified Y-Wing starship, with its ion cannons replaced by additional seating. He also asks them, if possible, to do something, anything to deter them from coming back to take Nev’Ra again.

With that they depart Ryloth, joining several other starships along the way. They eventually see the corvette in the distance and they hang back as ordered while a distraction is created. Within a few minutes of the bombardment, two shots from a planetary ion cannon disrupt the shields and the Y-Wing is able to dock.

On board the corvette there are two Lambda-class shuttles, one of which was used in the abduction of Nev’Ra. Within moments of them docking, several stormtroopers appear to capture them, but the group is able to take them out with a few well-placed shots, including Jolun’s blaster shot from one of the shuttles.

The group then accesses a computer in the docking bay and Jessa reaches out with the force to determine her exact location. They are all surprised to find that she is being held in a living quarters chamber towards the front of the ship, and not in the holding cells near the back of the ship.

Making their way to the living quarters they are lucky not to encounter anyone. Jolun overrides the security mechanism on the door and the enter a room with sparse but luxurious accommodations. Nev’Ra lays unconscious, her eyes half-open, in a comfortable reading chair. The group moves to her and they find she is in a coma.

As they are making their plans to exit expeditiously, the door opens and a stormtrooper enters. Before conflict escalates, the trooper removes his helmet and indicates that his name is Petr Nevoh and that he is a rebel spy. He informs them that this part of the ship is currently under video surveillance blackout and that this may be some kind of trap. Before the group leaves, he asks them to stun him, as his plan is to indicate that he saw them enter and was overcome.

Back in the corridor, they are confronted by Captain Verma, the same man who confronted Jessa and delivered the charges of treason on Coruscant. There is a brief firefight and when Verma’s men are defeated he retreats into a nearby intersection.

The group makes their way back to the ship and set the shuttles’ engines to overload, deterring any Imperials from making a counter-offensive attack. They escape in the Y-wing and are guided back to Vod’Ri’s estate on the surface of Ryloth.

The reunion between father and daughter should be a happy one, but Nev’Ra cannot be woken from her sleep. When Jessa cannot revive her, Vod’Ri asks again, as it is vital to him that his daughter be in good health. Jessa returns to the room and reaches deep into the Force to repair the harm done to her by the Empire. After some time, Nev’Ra goes into a restful sleep and Jessa believes she will awaken by morning.

Vod’Ri praises Jessa’s work and awards Jessa, Jolun and Mara a weapon from his private collection. He will offer these gifts after a good night’s rest.

Session 1

Jolun, Mara and Vance are leaving Corellia after a peaceful respite there. Their next job is taking them to Ryloth to deliver construction computer systems to the technology-deprived Twi’leks. As the cargo is loading and they are readying to depart, Jolun receives a call from his personal assistant, Bregun.

Bregun asks Jolun to return to their office in Coruscant to take a young woman home to Ryloth. Given the similar destination, and that there is some political sensitivity in this task, Jolun agrees to take on the passenger.

Leaving the orbit of Corellia, Vance programs the navigational computer with ease and wonders at programming the ship’s computer with light sequences. He sees Jolun busy with paperwork out of the corner of his eye, and decides against further irritation.

Jessa is performing her meditations, searching herself and the Force around her, when she is filled with a sense of dread. Not sure of much more than that she is in some kind of personal danger, she packs a few belongings and heads out into the surrounding neighbourhoods of Coruscant.

She travels on foot to her old haunt, a lower ghetto where she worked as a delivery person for a kind Ithorian grocer named Ortor. He seems surprised to see her, and when she asks if anything is the matter he denies his sudden fear with a simple, “No.” Moments later, as Jessa starts to leave, he says, “You are in danger. You must leave now.” He hands her a bag with some food supplies, concerned for her health.

Exiting the store, she sees two ominous shadows to her left, approximately 500 meters away. They are cloaked and the passerbys are giving them a wide berth. She senses the Dark Side of the Force in them and walks the other way. When she looks back, they are moving away from her. Curious, she attempts to follow them and is thwarted when they enter a personal transport and speed away.

Back at the grocery store, Ortor confirms that those same two Jedi were in his store earlier and asked about her. When he said that he hadn’t seen her lately, they pushed him into a display and left.

Exiting hyperspace and descending into Coruscant, Jolun receives a voice mail from his office. A man tells Jolun that Jessa’s anonymity is no more and that she is in danger. Jolun touches base with Jessa, and she takes a shuttle to the Valun offices to meet up with the others. The name of the man that spoke with Jolun seems so familiar, but she can’t quite place it…

Vance heads off into the bowels of Coruscant to gamble with some friends and raise his spirits.

In the office, the group is greeted by the familiar surroundings of Jolun’s office. A catered meal is present, and Jolun and Mara are introduced to Nev’ra Sedai, the secretive passenger. She is tall and silent, with a kind nature to her.

Jessa meets up with Jolun here, and they quietly replenish with the provided food.

As they are starting to discuss who could be threatening Jessa, electricity is cut to the office, with the only faint illumination being provided through the window. Moments later, the door is pried open and an Imperial Captain states that Jessa is being charged with treason against the Emperor.

As three Imperial soldiers and the Captain enter the room, a firefight ensues. Mara fiercly defends Jolun, standing between two soldiers and drawing their fire. Meanwhile, two soldiers engage Jessa in melee, using their vibroblades in the closer range to subdue their target. At one point Bregun tosses in a stun grenade that Jolun had kept in his desk and is in turn shot with a blaster pistol. He drops behind the desk with a yelp.

The fight turns in the player’s favour when Vance returns from his gambling and fires a shot unawares. The Captain tries to make an escape by shooting the window. Shortly after he falls, and so do his men.

The group discusses a strategy to dispose of the Imperial soldiers that attack them when they notice a personal transport directly beneath the window. Vance climbs down into it and brings it up. They send an update using the Captain’s data pad, to indicate that the Jedi has escaped and they are pursuing. After this they break a window in an adjacent building and place the soldiers there, so as to look that the Jedi defeated them. In the transport they break the homing signal off and send it away, further into Coruscant and away from the evidence.

While time is still on their side, they hastily board their ship and leave Coruscant, breaking orbit and setting course for Ryloth. Through the following six days of travel they review the copy of the Captain’s data pad, and find that their orders come from a Sith named Darth Volkir. They were lucky in that Jessa was not expected to be at Jolun’s office, so a smaller team was dispatched. At this point Mara decides that Jolun needs to work on his personal defense skills.

As an interesting aside, Nev’ra maintains the weapons systems of the starship without being asked.

Leaving hyperspace above Ryloth, Nev’ra provides coordinates to her father’s house. When they get there, she requests an escort, as no one is there to greet her. Jolun may want to collect his payment as well.

Travelling through the village, they are shown the squat huts that the Twi’leks have build from clay and brick. When they reach the Sedai estate, the contrast of stone masonry and large windows is a luxurious contrast. Inside they are shown to Vod’ri’s office, where the entrepreneur monitors several monitors in a simple room. He wears fine quality linens and shoes, but otherwise there is no sign of his wealth.

The afternoon passes, with a tour of his weapon and armour facility, showing the high quality and craftsmanship of the items he creates. His dedication to the craft comes from training with the Mandalorians during his youth. The group shares a dinner with the Sedais, enjoying many earthy flavours and a mulled wine. Jessa and Mara retire after supper, while Jolun drinks with Vod’ri and Vance talks with Nev’ra.

Later that night, as everyone is sleeping, Vance wanders off into the village to clear his head. He considers the skill of Nev’ra and the work that Vod’ri has taken on and what that means to him. It is fairly dark, but he still walks into the night with much on his mind.

As he returns, he hears the familiar sound of a smaller starship flying overhead, and it’s heading towards the Sedai estate. Hustling back, he radios Jessa, alerting her to the situation. When the shuttle lands some 100 meters behind the house the group is starting to awaken.

In a forced march, ten clone troopers and two commanders come into the courtyard. With everyone ready, Vance ambushes the group with a frag grenade, harming four of them. The troopers are well trained, breaking into formations. Two go after Vance, four secure the courtyard and four head off into the house.

With the group so overwhelmed, the combat is gruesome. Jessa falls when she attempts to follow the clone troopers into the house, and Mara falls from a secured fighting position. Both Jolun and Vance have the sense to withdraw and this point and let the events unfold. At this point it becomes apparent that the troopers are not on an extermination mission but an extraction mission. They confirm Jessa’s vitals, but do not harm her further. Moments later two troopers emerge from the house with an unconscious Nev’ra and they retreat to their shuttle.

In the morning, Jessa and Mara are revived, and the group is treated.

A Twi’lek joins them after they have eaten breakfast and insists that they rescue Nev’ra from the corvette that is orbiting Ryloth.
